    Happy Fourth of July, everybody!
One of my favorite holidays...but then, I do like fireworks. Just not in my private life.

Times change, and so do manners...
WARNING! POLITICALLY INCORRECT RANTING AHEAD! DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED!!! I MEAN IT!

    Rather proud of myself...
I've been fussing and fussing with a translation into Chinese. I think I finally have it correct, and will be checking with some native speakers I know on Monday to make sure that I did get it right; my written Chinese isn't as good as my spoken Chinese.

If I knew how, I'd post the Chinese here, but I lack the software to do it.

Part of the problem is that the word "duty" has quite a few meanings in English, and the ones that seemed to be in my English-to-Chinese dictionaries didn't fit. I finally tracked down a bigger dictionary that did have the correct definition, and was able to work from there (this dictionary was in "simplified" characters, which are a minor Pet Peeve of mine, but this time I was able to figure out which radicals to look under to find the real version.)

I've been reading Roman mysteries again...
I've been reading Roman mystery novels (mystery novels set in Ancient Rome) again, and in one of them, the sleuth's been threatened with banishment from the City.

This was a common punishment, and to a true Roman, it was terrifying---they weren't really happy away from Rome, or at least, Latium (modern Lazio), and a banished Roman had to stay at least five hundred miles away from the Pomerium, or sacred boundary of the city.

Outside of that radius, though, an exile could go anywhere, except to Rhodes.

After all, all Rhodes lead to Rome.

If you MUST dun me by phone...
...would it be that much to ask that you:

    A) Call at a civilized hour

    B) Stay on the line long enough to get your message across?

I got routed out of bed this morning by a mysterious call that turns out to be from Columbus, OH. I can't think of any company that would have reason to call me from there.

Since, even though I obeyed the command of "please hold for an important message," the call cut off, I have no idea of who it was.

Come to think of it, it might have been a political call...I am on the Republicans' lists.

    Writer's Block: Improvised Parenting!!?!

Let's say you're a hobgoblin for 24 hours. What sort of havoc would you wreak?

    Or:

If a baby of unknown origins suddenly fell into your care, would you keep it? What would you name it?

Given my utter lack of parenting skills and utter lack of experience with kidlets, I'd be on the horn to the police---"Help!" I'd yelp. "Help help help help!"

My life wouldn't allow me to keep a kid---hey, I don't even think that a pet is a good idea, no matter how nice it would be to have some living thing around here that cares if I live or die. And if I did, the second my friends in the Iowa SF community found out about the situation, they'd be headed up to my hometown at a speed that would make light look rather slow and crippled, to rescue the poor baby from my ignorance before I did something stupid or made a mistake.

As Andy Capp once put it: "You don't 'ave to lift a finger if yer can prove yer all thumbs!"
